Why I never arrive on time

Why I never arrive on time? becausse I have the belief that if you aim to arrive on time, you are scheduling to arrive late. Anything can happen along the way to cause you to be delayed. On average, Steelasophical aims to arrive at least 2 hours to satrt time. We will always let the client know that we aim to arrive 1 houe before for 2 reasons

1: Aiming to arrive at least 2 hours prior means we are giving ourselves enough tolerance for hold-ups along the way. If somehting drastic happens and we are not able to attend, it gives us a chance and time to find an alternative

2: Arriving mega early is one of our Exceecding Expectation activities and one thing that helps place a clients mind at ease.

Case Study 1

We had a booking in Leeds and I was picking up my percussionist along the way in Luton. Drove to a local filling station and while thereactually put the wrong fuel in the car. Fortunate to have noticed straight away so no real damage done. As our RAC breakdown service  would not attend without huge additional cost, we had to call out a local firm for assistance.

It took them about 2 hours to get to us, drain the fuel, flash through and place the right fuel into the car. We then carried out our journey, arriving bang on time!

Had we scheduled to arrive on time, we would have been at least 2 hours late.

Case Study 2

I had a solo booking in Wales for a 50th birthday party. driving along the M4, just close to junction 21, I had a sudden blowout. I pulled over to the hard shoulder and had to contact the RAC. My car was too close to the exit junction and it was not safe to carryout the change myself. The RAC engineer arrived about 90mins later.

We had to empty the car of all equipment to access the spare. As it turns out, even if I was in a safe location, i would not have been able to change the wheel because the garage that fitted the wheel used a pneumatic wrench and over tightened the nuts, which couls not have been loosened by hand.

The wheel was changed and I was finally on my way. I arrived at the venue bang on time. Had I not aiemd to arrive 3 hours early, I would have been late arriving and no doubt would have spoilt the surprise…. as I was the suprise that had to set the scene and create the atmosphere for the start of the party as gusests and the birthady girl arrived.

Case Study 3

This one was rather unusual. The couple booked a catering company for their wedding reception and meal. It was going to be in a marquee on the catering company private grounds. Alas, the couple fell out with the company and had to last minute, not only find another catering company, but a location for the reception.

They managed to so that …. but neglected to tell us. Fortunately although we got to the venue and there was no one there, we managed to call the bride, and one of the bridesmaids gave us the new address.

It was important as we were doing the complete wesdding day music, starting with the ceremony. All was well, thanks to arriving very early!

Everyone of the guests walked out

Although over 20 years ago, its a situation I recall so vividly. I was booked to provide music for a birthday party for a young lady and her family and friends. It was a short drinks reception in their back garden in Hampton Court Palace, close to the river Thames.

The reception was to lasy around 1 hour, with everyone then heading off to a local restaurant for the wedding meal. So, it was a unnique sight to see all the guests leaving the garden and heading off to for the meal as I played the finale song that everyone danced to on their way out of the garden.

The first (and only) time I can recall having Every guest leaving the venue before me.! Was rather sereal packing away on my own in someones garden, but a nice memory link to the past.

No legs to stand on

Well this one was humerous in the end. This was back in 1998 when I was at Bread Dead TMR Music recording Studio in London working on my first album. I arrived in the morning and spent most of the day recording. As it happens, I had a booking at a pub in London that evening, so completed the recording session and Marc helped me to pack my car.

Arrived at the venue only to find I had no stands to put my Steelpans on … they were still at the studio!!

So … not one to panic, and with no time to drive to the studio, I had a brain wave. I got hold of two small tables and placed the steelpans on the top of them and performed like that.

There was a similar experience with my percussionist who forgot to pack his Bongo and stand in his car!! we got the the booking only to find this out. Well we improvised. He used a sert of my spare Pan sticks, and used the top of one of our wheelie cases as a percussive instrument.

Things will go worng from time to time, so the important thing is not to stress, but have the clarity of thought to understand what has gone wrong, and what you can do to overcome the situation in the moment.

You’re the one that I want … you’re the only one I want

I was booked to eprform alongside a DJ for a fund raiser. An event for a young ld that lost his life to medical issues. My job was to play 2 sets. The first, at the start of the evening to set the atmosphere while people arrive, mix and mingle. The Dj then played and the I was down to play a send set after him.

A funny thing happened though … as I was about half way through my final set, I noticed the organiser takling to the DJ and they were both looking over at me.

I was blown away when the client came over and asked if I would play through until the end, as people prepfered my music to the DJ. But she did not ask me privately, we asked to use my microphone and made the request over my PA system, and with the reaction of her family, friends and guests, i could not refuse!
