JAMES BOND

Gary Trotman’s musical career includes a remarkable connection to the world of James Bond. His arrangement and performance of the traditional Jamaican folk song “Linstead Market” were used in the 2006 film Casino Royale, starring Daniel Craig in his first appearance as Agent 007.

The film’s official music credits identify “Linstead Market” as arranged and performed by Gary Trotman, courtesy of ARC Music Productions International Ltd. This was not the Bond theme or David Arnold’s orchestral score; it was a credited piece selected for inclusion in the finished movie.

For Gary, the achievement represents far more than a credit. It demonstrates the international reach of his musicianship and shows how authentic Caribbean music can enhance one of cinema’s most celebrated franchises. A traditional Jamaican melody travelled from Caribbean culture to the soundscape of a major production, carrying Gary’s arrangement and performance with it.

Today, Gary brings that same experience, versatility and professionalism to every Steelasophical performance. Whether entertaining at a wedding, corporate function, party or Caribbean celebration, clients can hire a musician whose work has featured in a James Bond film.

From Casino Royale to your special event, Steelasophical brings the Caribbean to you—with a genuine touch of 007 distinction.

COME DINE WITH ME

Gary Trotman brought the sound of Steelasophical to Channel 4’s Come Dine With Me during Series 25, Episode 75, originally broadcast on 6 April 2012. The Chelmsford episode followed contestant Martin Young as he hosted the final evening of the competition with a Caribbean theme.

Gary was not one of the competing cooks. He appeared as the evening’s steel pan entertainer, adding Caribbean music, energy and atmosphere to Martin’s dinner party. His performance helped transform a home setting into a celebration that transported the host and guests far beyond Essex.

Martin went on to win the competition and praised Gary’s contribution, saying the performance made everyone feel as though they were in Barbados. He believed Steelasophical’s entertainment played a part in making his evening memorable and helping him secure victory.

The television appearance demonstrated exactly what Gary continues to deliver at weddings, corporate events, birthday parties and private celebrations across the UK: professional musicianship, personality and an instinctive understanding of how to create the right mood.

From entertaining guests on television to performing at celebrations, Gary approaches every occasion with the same energy and commitment. Steelasophical does not simply play music—it transforms the atmosphere and brings the Caribbean to you.

LATE / LIGHT LUNCH

MEL, SUE, GARY  AND JIMMY HILL

Gary Trotman on Channel 4’s Late Lunch

A 1998 performance with the house band during a programme featuring Jimmy Hill

Website-ready article • researched and source-checked • 5 September 2026

Gary Trotman Performs on Channel 4’s Late Lunch with Jimmy Hill

Long before Steelasophical became known for bringing the sound and spirit of the Caribbean to weddings, corporate events and private celebrations, Gary Trotman was already building a varied career as a steelpan musician. One of the most memorable entries in his professional record is a 1998 television appearance on Channel 4’s Late Lunch, performing with the programme’s house band during an edition featuring football broadcasting legend Jimmy Hill.

It is a compact credit, but it captures something important about Gary’s musical journey: the ability to carry the steelpan confidently into a live studio setting and make its distinctive sound part of mainstream British entertainment.

What was Late Lunch?

Late Lunch grew out of Light Lunch, the lively Channel 4 format presented by Mel Giedroyc and Sue Perkins. The British Comedy Guide records the programme’s 1997–1999 run, identifies Late Lunch as its alternative title and names Princess Productions as the production company. Contemporary listings and surviving episode guides place Late Lunch on Channel 4 throughout 1998, when the series mixed conversation, food, comedy, celebrity guests and live studio energy.

That atmosphere made music more than background decoration. Programme credits identify a resident band, giving visiting performers the opportunity to work within an established television ensemble. Gary’s professional profile describes his appearance simply and directly: a “Late Lunch Performance with House band & Jimmy Hill” in 1998.

A steelpan performance in a national television studio

Television performance calls for a particular kind of musicianship. The player must be prepared, adaptable and able to contribute within the timing and structure of a live or studio-recorded programme. Gary’s Late Lunch credit places him in exactly that environment: playing with the house band rather than presenting a separate, self-contained concert.

The publicly accessible sources do not identify the song, arrangement or length of the performance. They do, however, support the central story. Gary’s StarNow professional profile records the 1998 engagement, while his Encore profile lists “Late Lunch (Channel 4)” among his notable appearances. These are Gary’s own career records rather than independent episode documentation, so they are best presented as his professional recollection—not embellished with details the archive cannot yet verify.

Sharing the programme with Jimmy Hill

Jimmy Hill was much more than a familiar television personality. The National Football Museum describes him as one of the most influential figures in English football, whose career included playing, management, administration, broadcasting and a major role in the development of television punditry. By 1998, his voice and unmistakable screen presence were woven into British football culture.

For Gary, performing during a programme featuring Hill connected Caribbean musical tradition with a figure recognised across British sport and broadcasting. The pairing also reflects what Late Lunch did so well: bringing together guests and performers from very different parts of public life in one relaxed studio format.

Why the appearance matters

The steelpan was created in Trinidad and Tobago and has travelled far beyond its Caribbean origins. Yet every appearance on national television helps widen the instrument’s audience. Gary’s Late Lunch performance belongs to that wider story—one in which steelpan musicians demonstrate that the instrument can move comfortably between cultural celebration, popular repertoire, television production and formal events.

It also reveals qualities that remain central to Steelasophical today: musical versatility, professional reliability and the confidence to perform for any audience. A Channel 4 studio, a wedding ceremony, a corporate reception and a private celebration all demand different choices, but the core responsibility is the same—to read the room, support the occasion and create an atmosphere people remember.

From Late Lunch to Steelasophical

Gary’s career has continued across television, recording and live events. Steelasophical now brings his steelpan sound to audiences through carefully tailored performances and a repertoire designed for many kinds of celebration. The 1998 Late Lunch appearance is therefore more than a line in a biography. It is an early public marker of the professionalism and adaptability that would become part of the Steelasophical identity.

For clients, that history offers reassurance. They are not simply booking an instrument; they are booking a musician accustomed to collaborating, responding to a production environment and delivering under pressure. The same calm preparation that matters in a television studio matters when the timing of a ceremony changes, guests arrive early or a corporate schedule moves at short notice.

A television moment worth preserving

Archive records are often incomplete, especially for daytime and entertainment television from the 1990s. Public episode guides confirm Late Lunch’s 1998 broadcast run but do not currently supply the exact airdate for Gary’s appearance. Until a production record, recording or detailed contemporary listing emerges, the responsible account is the one preserved in Gary’s professional profiles: a 1998 Late Lunch performance with the house band during a programme featuring Jimmy Hill.

That record deserves its place in the Steelasophical story. It connects Gary Trotman’s musicianship with a memorable Channel 4 format, a major British sporting personality and a period when his steelpan career was already reaching national television audiences.
